How much does a contractor website cost?
Storefront Web Studio ยท October 2026
For a small contractor, a solid website usually costs a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars up front, plus roughly $20 to $50 a month for hosting and upkeep. Agencies charge more, doing it yourself costs less money and more evenings, and some deals look cheap but keep your domain. Here's how to tell them apart.
The four ways contractors get a website
1. Build it yourself. Website builders like Wix, Squarespace, or GoDaddy charge a monthly subscription, usually somewhere around $15 to $50 a month. The real cost is your time: picking a template, writing every word, taking photos, and getting the phone layout and Google settings right. It's easy to start one and hard to find the evenings to finish it.
2. Hire a freelancer. Expect roughly $500 to $3,000 for a small site. Quality varies a lot, so look at sites they've built for businesses like yours, and ask two questions before you pay: who owns the domain, and who hosts the site after launch?
3. Hire an agency. Agencies that specialize in contractors often charge $2,000 to $12,000 and up, sometimes with a 12-month marketing contract. You get more strategy and custom work, which makes sense for a company with several crews and an advertising budget.
4. "Free" or rent-a-site deals. Some marketing and lead companies offer a website with no upfront cost and a monthly fee, often a few hundred dollars a month on a long contract. Read the fine print: the domain and the site often stay theirs, so if you leave, your website leaves with them.
What changes the price
- How many pages: one page, or a page for each service and each town you cover
- Custom design or a template
- Who writes the words and who supplies the photos
- Extras like online booking, a financing form, or a project gallery
- Changes after launch: included in a plan, or billed by the hour
What you should get at any price
- A domain registered in your name, not the builder's
- A site made for phones first, since that's where most local searches happen
- Your phone number one tap away
- The site linked from your Google Business Profile
- Fast loading and HTTPS (the padlock in the address bar)
- Your files and logins if you ever leave
Red flags
- The provider registers the domain in their own name.
- A contract longer than a year, with a fee to cancel.
- A guaranteed "#1 on Google". Nobody can promise that.
- No clear price for changes after launch.
- You can't get a copy of your site or the logins.

Questions business owners ask
Is a $99 website worth it?
It can be, if you get a domain in your name and a page that works well on phones. Ask what the second year costs: some low prices come with high monthly fees, or with no updates at all.
Do I have to pay every month?
Every website needs hosting, and most need small updates now and then. With a builder you pay for that yourself; with a care plan it's bundled in.
How long does it take?
A one-page site can be live in about a week once the details are in. Bigger sites take a couple of weeks.
